A garage door shouldn't wake up the whole house. Different sounds point to different problems — here's a quick diagnostic guide.
Squeaking or Squealing
Almost always dry rollers, hinges, or springs. A silicone-based garage door lubricant (never WD-40, which strips grease) applied to moving parts usually solves it in minutes.
Grinding
Grinding usually means worn steel rollers dragging in the track, or a misaligned track forcing the rollers to bind. Swapping steel rollers for nylon ones is one of the best noise upgrades available.
Rattling
Loose hardware. Nuts, bolts, and brackets vibrate loose over years of use. A socket wrench and ten minutes of tightening makes a big difference.
Banging or Popping
This one deserves attention. Popping can mean sections are worn and catching on each other, or that a torsion spring is straining. A loud single bang often means a spring has snapped — stop using the door and call a pro.
Slapping
A loose opener chain slapping the rail. The chain tension needs adjusting.
